Speech Recognition
Computer based “speech recognition” or “voice recognition” technologies provide two primary functionalities for voice input to a computer- voice command and control and speech to text. The voice command and control component enables one to command menu items, hyperlinks, dialog boxes, etc.- usually things one does with their mouse or keyboard hotkeys. The speech to text component is ‘transcription of text’ by voice. The Nuance Communications speech recognition products offer unified command and control and text to speech components. The Dragon Medical Practice Edition PC product integrates easily with most Electronic Medical Records/Electronic Health Records (EMR/HER) applications. It includes a broad range of ‘tools’ to make dictating chart notes easy and can provide reduced time to completion with voice macros, express web searches, and voice commands of common EMR functions. With utilities like Data Distribution and scripting capabilities it offers centalized control and automated functions…it even offers ‘off screen’ dictation capabilities to allow one to dictate while observing clinical studies or the previous ‘visit note’.
